Juvenile Detention Center

booktalksThis program is no longer available. Poetry Rocks! is the program currently offered to students at the Seminole Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

Students who attend this program are encouraged to read, and explore the world and new ideas through books. The program began in June of 2005 and has continued on a monthly basis. Each month the hour long program includes a selection of the following: age appropriate fiction and nonfiction booktalks, poetry, science experiments, magic, and children’s books. Often, the children’s book and poetry are accompanied by music. Props, costumes, music, and accents are used to enhance the booktalk experience. This program is given to male and female groups ranging in size from 20-50 middle and high school students. All the books that are booktalked during the program are donated to the facility at the end of the program. Having access to the books immediately after the program has been highly successful. The books remain at the facility and continue to circulate among the students through book carts provided by the teachers and the guards during and after school hours. An effort is made to communicate with the teachers who provide helpful feedback in regards to the amount of reading being done and what titles are most popular. Replacement copies of well used books are supplied as needed. The funds for the donated books are provided by the Friends of the Library, Seminole County. The preparations and presentation of these programs are presented free of charge by a qualified youth services librarian who is also a member of The Literacy Alliance.
