This program is no longer available. Tales Alive! is the program currently offered to children at the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida.

This program is designed to share positive reading experiences with the children and parents who are residents of this facility, to foster their curiosity and interest in learning, and to encourage the use of their local library. The program began in June of 2003 and has continued on a monthly basis. This 30-40 minute story program includes a selection of the following: puppet shows, picture books (often accompanied by music), magic, science experiments, creative stretches, poetry, fingerplays, and rhymes. Some type of small gift is given at the end of each program. These gifts include stickers, bookmarks, paper finger puppets, or candy. The audience for this program generally includes 10–20 children (ranging in age from 2 to 10 years old) and the parents of the younger children. A small stage and the puppets for this program are provided by the Friends of the Library, Seminole County. The preparations and presentation of the programs are presented free of charge by an experienced and qualified youth services librarian who is a member of The Literacy Alliance. Volunteers are utilized to manage the children before the program, perform in the puppet shows, and distribute the small gift after the program. This group of volunteers generally includes two adults and two teenagers. The teen volunteers often vary, allowing a large number of teenagers the opportunity to participate in their community in a meaningful way while gaining a better understanding of the issues of homelessness.
